Chapters 20-25
Okonkwo couldn`t have the chance to lead his warlike clan against the new religion, he regret his time in Mbanda because he lost the years in which he might have taken the highest titles in the clan. What he could do was to improove himself, and his surroundings: he planned to rebuild his compound in larger scale, he also had manage to accept Nwoye`s unfortunate departure. Also Enzinma didnt got married even if she turned into a beautiful girl because his father told her to wait till they went to Umofia and in that way he could be happier. However Umofia had changed in many ways: The church had come and led many astray. Ogbuefi had joined. He had cut the anklet of his titles, and cast it away to join the christians. They had also brought a government. They built a court and there were also messengers. Obierika and Okonkwo speak about the settling of the white men in Umofia. Okonkwo asks why did Umofia gave up and accepted to be ruled. Obierika compared them with Abame and he said it was too late to fight for what they wanted.
Akunna argues with Mr. brown about lesser gods, he said that the messengers were for them so that they could approach him through them. He also said it was like himself, that he was the head of the church. There must be a head in this world among them and finally he compared Brown with the messengers. When Okonwko returned to Umofia, Mr. Brown goes to tell him that Nwoye is in a training college for teachers. Okonkwo chases him away with threats. Then Mr. brown`s health begins to fail and he ends of leaving his flock. When Okonkwo arrived nobody payed attention to him, except for his two daughters because of their flawless face. He diddt expect that, he actually was expecting something bigger. He was grieved because he moured for the clan whcih he saw breaking un and falling apart. He also mourned for the warlike men of Umofia, who were becoming soft like women.
Mr. Smith was the one who replaced Mr. Brown. He was a strict and intolerrant man. Mr. Smith danced a furious step, so the drums went mad. This means that he was furious and in consequence all of his surroundings would react the same. A few days later, in the annual ceremony to honor the earth deity a man called Enoch decided to unmask an egwugwu. This was the grates crime a man could commit in Umofia. Also another crime was to stay or to do anything which might reduce its inmortal prestige in the eyes of the unitated. That was exactly what Enoch did. He had killed an ancestral spirit. Ajofia incites townspeople so they could clean their land of the white spirits. She told the white men that they could stay but if they like it the tribe`s way. She said their anger was great, but they have held it down so they can talk to them. while that, Enoch was exiled, He tells the egwugwu that Smith demands that they leave the matter in his hands. They ignored Smith`s ordeds and burned the church.
Days went by, and Okonkwo was almost happy again. Excpet for the opinion of others that didn´t want to kill the christians. They are very well prepared for them, with machetes and tolls that protect them. One day, the District Comissioner decides to talk about the church as friends with them. The tribe agrees and the most important men went. When they arrived and left their machetes in the street, the white men when they are unobserved decided to take them and handcuff them in jail for several days. They recieved no attention, in fact they were suffering with insults and physical abuse. They made a deal stating that the prisioners would be released if Umofia would pay two-hundread and fifty cowries. In this moment Okonwko was suffering and couldn`t bar with himself. Right now was the peak of his problems. Days later, there was a town`s reunion, where the first speaker laments the tragedy that had just occured, and he also said that he may have to spill blood if he enters into the battle with the white men.
In the middle of the speech, 5 court messengers came and approached the crowd. They anounced that Okonkwo had killed himself. He could bare it anymore, The truth is that he thought that killing himself would be the best way to stay away from his problems. As the book said, the comissioner in his novel would only have a little paragraph for what had happened to Okonkwo, he didn`t recognized what Okonkwo had fight for all over his entire life.
